Hi,I am Ricardo, owner of Rutas por Almeria. Join me on one of our Volcano Tours through the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata. Lets explore this unspoiled awesome corner of Almeria Province together. The following is a sample tour.
Hiking (3 stages. 2 nights. 200€ per person)
This is one of the Tours that will allow you to explore the entire Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar , a natural space of an invaluable beauty and serenity. The contrasts of the landscape, the colors of the earth and the sea, the lights and the shadows, the silence; everything belongs to this spot, where it is easy to find what we thought lost in the Mediterranean Sea.
Having a walk or to sit down and watch the sunset from any little beach or hillock, can be the best gift for the visitor.
Stage 1: Cabo de Gata-San José (20,6 km-6 h)
The sea melts with the earth both, with white beaches and vigorously with the black cliffs, creating a paradise of light and contrasts. We will start from the town of San Miguel de Cabo de Gata, where we will leave the cars to hike towards San José. Parallel to the road, on the left, we will find the "Charcones de las Salinas", the old salt pan lagoon. Surely it is one of the most outstanding ecosystems in the park. The zigzagging of the tour will take us to the Mirador de las Sirenas, constantly guarded by the tower of the Lighthouse. From here we have the most famous sight of the park, where the dark volcanic rocks surface from the sea, covered with its white foam.
The volcano tours hiking trail continues to Vela Blanca, which got its name from a huge bentonite block at the bottom of the cliff. Its silhouette reminds of sails. The track leads down to the beach where we will have a rest. On the right, there is another ravine which leads first to Cala Carbón and then to Cala de la Media Luna, from where we will get to Mónsul beach.
Magic is everywhere and the visitor can feel it right from the beginning:
The trail keeps going down and leads us to a spectacular landscape, Cala de los Genoveses, that got its name because a Genovese fleet was moored there in a battle in the XII century. Leaving the beach behind, we will face the last part of this first stage, crossing what is called Campillo de los Genoveses, arriving at San José.
Stage 2: San José-Rodalquilar (23,4 km-6 h)
This stage is the longest one of the tour and the trip with the deepest contrasts. After we leave Cala Higuera, we will climb a beautiful stretch that takes us to a watchover dominating spectacular cliffs and shoals. We will enjoy this admirable landscape, and after a long descent we will arrive at Los Escullos, with its castle "Castillo de San Felipe", one of the bastions for vigilance and defense of the coast. From here we will find a light and easy route to the town of La Isleta del Moro Arraez, a former hideout for Moorish pirates.

After passing the marine town and before we arrive at the Mirador de las Amatistas, we will take a winding track that ascents to an ancient country-house and a well through the Barranco del Negro. Once there we will look at an old pine forest. Leaving the coast and going deep in the volcanic mountains, there is a complete change in the landscape. We will be able to see a volcanic crater and the Rodalquilar Valley, and after a descent along the Barranco Requena, full of vegetation, we will arrive at Rodalquilar, a former mining town, where we will spend the night.
Stage 3: Rodalquilar-Aguamarga (19,3 km-4:30 h)
Our senses will be captured by the white range of colours that we will find while going on this route. The valley of Rodalquilar is not really a valley but a volcanic crater. It extends to the sea shore, to El Playazo, with its castle of San Ramón. We will get back to the mountainside of Cerro de la Molata to follow the path and gradually we will approach Cala del Cuervo, a beautiful beach from where we will make out Playa de las Negras and Cerro Negro. We will have to pass it to get to Cala de San Pedro, the last hippy spot in the National Park.
This route following the above mentioned path is the best one to know the Northern coastline of the park, which is a coast full of cliffs, reeves and amazing coves. It is 8 kilometer long and many of the creeks are still virgin. The hiker will enjoy all these eye-catching landscapes up to Aguamarga, where our route comes to an end.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful Volcano tours of Cabo de Gata.
