Review:
Perched high up on the side of the square, and overlooking the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Pulcinella commands a special place amongst the dining establishments of Mojacar. Naturally, with views of some 50 kms or more over the whole area the setting is spectacular and this is an extremely popular restaurant with families and romantic couples alike, especially as the sun sets. In the summer months, Pulcinella Mojacar will pack in more customers than any other restaurant in the entire town, including the beach resort establishments. The restaurant has a stable and dedicated team working the kitchen and the floor headed by the owner Abel and his wife. With Abel in the kitchen preparing the perfect pizza dough, and two kitchens on the go at once, this is an incredibly busy place.
In the Autumn and Spring things are calm and the restaurant reverts to the inside the building, with equally stunning views. The décor is tasteful and comfortable and for the romantic couple it makes for a great place to chat and enjoy good company alongside good food and wines. During the winter you may find that the owners take time out to recover and be with their family, so it is recommended that you check online first for their latest opening hours.
As for the food, my personal experience of the dishes served has been very good indeed. I have eaten there regularly (all types of dishes) and I have never been disappointed nor have I ever left feeling hungry. The pizzas are consistently excellent and will more than match (and often outstrip) any other pizzeria in the area, and I've tried them all! When I was living in the village itself this would be my preferred takeaway pizzeria and I know that it gets the thumbs up from the other locals!
Of course, it is not just pizzas that are served here and their pasta dishes too are equally good. Abel has gone to the trouble of sourcing a supplier to make the pasta to exactly his own personal, and very secret, recipe.
When it comes to desserts in Spain it isn't unusual to be served a bought in dish. Not here! The desserts served are all made on the premises and are fresh. They are of a high quality with a little imagination than other places and tasty – a great way to finish your meal.
Specialities: Without doubt, Pizzas. You can serve me a Pulcinella, Ensalada Capresse, followed by a Pizza Volcano, (Tomato, Mozzarella, Mushrooms and Spicy Salami) anytime! I also love the Panna Cotta dessert...although if you put the Chocolate Fondant in front of me I wouldn't be unhappy!
Costs: Starters range from 6€ through to 9€, Pizzas and pastas are around the 10€ to 11.50€ mark, and other mains, such as steaks are 12€ upwards. If pizza isn't your thing then, there are some interesting pasta main courses on the menu including, Ravioli de Foie de Canard with White Truffle sauce! Desserts cost 5€.
House red (Campo Marin Tinto D.O. Carinena) is 8€ or you could go for something more expensive from Riojo's at 16€ to a Ribera de Duero Seniorio de Nava Crianza at 35€.
Verdict: Highly Recommended – if its a pizza you are after and a great view in the summer then this most definitely the place for you. In the other months if you wish for a more formal setting the inside of the restaurant is the place to be.
